The Female Condom Programme in Mozambique is a three-year programme, operational since January 2011. The programme is currently being implemented in Maputo and Nampula provinces by a consortium of three organisations: Fórum Mulher, Pathfinder International and PSI/Mozambique. The overall goal of the programme is to contribute to the reduction of the number of HIV infections and unwanted/unplanned pregnancies among the sexually active population.
The organisations within the consortium complement each other’s expertise in a very effective manner: Fórum Mulher is very strong in advocacy, with a vast network of women’s organisations under its umbrella; Pathfinder International does capacity building of technical health care personnel and community outreach; and PSI/Mozambique is strong in supply chain management and social marketing. All organisations are actively engaged in Interpersonal Communication (IPC) to create demand and to familiarize people with the consistent use of female condoms.
The Consortium works in conjunction with the national Council of HIV and the Ministry of Health on various fronts, including the approval of all IEC material.
